Tesamorelin is a synthetic, 44-amino-acid peptide analog of human growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH). It binds to GHRH receptors on pituitary somatotroph cells, stimulating the synthesis and release of endogenous growth hormone and increasing circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).
Growth hormone participates in lipid metabolism, including lipolysis—the breakdown of stored triglycerides. Clinical trials of FDA-approved tesamorelin formulations demonstrated reductions in visceral adipose tissue, the fat surrounding abdominal organs, in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
Compounded tesamorelin is not FDA-approved. Findings from approved formulations in this specific population do not establish the safety or effectiveness of compounded tesamorelin for general fat loss, muscle development, or anti-aging.
